2025 Confirmed: MICS Is on the Move!

2025 was a year of visible growth, new connections and important milestones for MICS: the Mechatronics Innovation Campus Schiedam. The ambition to build a strong mechatronics community increasingly took shape this year – in bricks, partnerships and encounters.

Strengthening the ecosystem

A major step in 2025 was MICS joining industry association Hi Delta. This strengthens our position within the South Holland manufacturing ecosystem and connects us even more closely with companies, educational institutions and public authorities working on innovation, talent development and technological progress. Together, we are building a strong and future-proof manufacturing industry in the region.

This year also saw the start of our collaboration with Beethoven South Holland. Through this partnership, we contribute to the ambition of training around 2,000 additional technicians for the high-tech and semiconductor sectors by 2030. This is a crucial challenge, in which we are exploring how MICS can serve as a meeting place where education and industry reinforce one another.

From vision to reality: Omega, Atlas and the MICS Robot

2025 marked key moments in the physical development of the campus. Building Omega – the first new-build project at MICS – was completed, and Metrohm has since moved in. This means that the transformation of the area has not only begun, but has also become visible and tangible.

At the same time, preparations for the construction of Atlas have started. This next building will, among others, become home to Boers & Co. As a result, the MICS ecosystem continues to grow: in the number of companies, in scale and in the diversity of activities.

Along the A20 motorway, MICS also gained a new landmark this year: the 16-metre-high MICS Robot, built from shipping containers. This iconic artwork symbolises knowledge, innovation, collaboration and talent, and makes it clear to everyone that a new hotspot for mechatronics is being developed here.

Meeting, connecting and collaborating

This year once again demonstrated that a campus is more than just buildings. In September, one year after the official kick-off of MICS, we came together again during an informal community BBQ. Colleagues from companies such as Boers & Co, LMesh, Studio MBB, ECP and Craft Education, together with relations from the ONS building, the municipality of Schiedam, and a large international delegation from Metrohm and Hi Delta, met informally on campus.

These encounters are essential for the development of the MICS ecosystem. By getting to know one another, new ideas and collaborations emerge – often from chance conversations. It is no coincidence that we organise these moments: the most beautiful innovations begin with meeting.

MICS in the city and the region

MICS was also visible beyond the campus. We were proud of our prominent role in the opening film of ‘Schiedam Celebrates 750’, in which the city reflected on its past, took stock of the present and looked ahead to the future. In that future, MICS clearly plays a role.

The business festival – part of the anniversary celebrations – was a great success. The city visited MICS and became acquainted with the strength, innovation and versatility of the manufacturing industry.

In addition, MICS received significant attention in the media and trade press, with publications in outlets such as AD, NU.nl and local and regional media, including Gers! Magazine. We were also visibly present at trade fairs such as the Precision Fair. Our reach continued to grow via LinkedIn and with the launch of the MICS brochure.

Looking ahead: a solid foundation for further growth

Since the official kick-off of MICS in October 2024, major steps have been taken. With the completion of Omega, the preparations for Atlas and the growing community, we are in the midst of a promising transformation.

This picture is endorsed by the MRDH, which recognises MICS as a strategic location where education, companies and government come together to work on innovation and the training of technical talent.

To take this further, a steering group has now been launched, which will present its findings in March. These outcomes underline the importance of MICS as a link between regional labour market demand and the development of the manufacturing industry, and form a solid basis for further deepening collaboration in the coming years.

With broad support from the municipality of Schiedam, MRDH, the province of South Holland and regional partners, we are steadily building a campus that is of significance for the whole of South Holland and the Netherlands.

2025 confirmed what we feel and see: MICS is on the move… and this is only the beginning!

We would like to thank all partners, companies, educational institutions and stakeholders for their commitment and trust over the past year. Together, we continue to build a campus where technology, talent and collaboration come together.

On to 2026!
