First Building of the MICS Campus Completed: Omega Presented to Metrohm

The first new development project within the MICS campus has been completed: the Omega building at Jan van Riebeeckweg 21. The brand-new owner, Metrohm, ceremoniously received the keys on March 13th. This handover marks a milestone in the development of the Mechatronics Innovation Campus Schiedam (MICS), which SDK Vastgoed (part of VolkerWessels) is developing in close collaboration with the municipality of Schiedam and the mechatronics sector.

Alderman Antoinette Laan (SchieDistrict area development) welcomes Metrohm’s relocation, as the new location allows the company to expand and establish itself in the heart of the campus. “The municipality is eager to revitalize the business park. However, it is not just about renewing real estate; we want to add something new. The development of the campus in the ’s-Gravelandsepolder makes this possible. Entrepreneurs here will benefit from an ecosystem that everyone can take advantage of. For the region, MICS means innovation, a strong business climate, knowledge exchange, attracting talent, and filling job vacancies. Metrohm already recognizes these advantages.”

A New Building for Metrohm

Metrohm manufactures chemical analysis instruments that are used across the world, supplying customers such as Intel, Samsung, and Rolls Royce. The new Omega building, located by the Schie River and next to the A20 highway, provides Metrohm with 7,350 m² of flexible space. This is exactly what this growing international company needs as a new home for its 100 employees in Schiedam. The move is scheduled for later this year.

Timoer Frelink (Managing Director, Metrohm Applikon BV) stated: “Our building on De Brauwweg, where we have been based since 1982, has become too small. We are looking forward to moving into the first new building on this innovative campus. MICS and Omega provide us with all the development space we need now and for the coming years. This building will also help us attract new employees.” Frelink pointed out that the building is modern, open, and bright. “This makes his makes who we are and what we do more visible. It simultaneously offers our colleagues an inspiring workplace. Assembly areas, training rooms, laboratories, and office spaces are seamlessly integrated here. The growing MICS network also challenges us to collaborate further with industry peers. Here, we can continue to grow and take our work to the next level—right in Schiedam.”

Flexible Buildings

Omega has been designed modularly. This makes future space expansions easy to implement. This flexible layout is characteristic of the new buildings at the MICS campus and aligns with the needs of companies in the modern manufacturing industry. The demand for development and production space is always changing, and the MICS buildings provide the flexibility to optimally support business processes. Sustainable growth and development are key. The construction of Omega took less than a year and was carried out by contractor Systabo (VolkerWessels).

Niels Langenhuizen (Director of SDK Vastgoed and MICS developer) commented: “The completion of the first MICS building is a milestone. Turning vision into reality happens step by step. This applies not only to the buildings, but also to the growth of the ecosystem of businesses, education, society, and government. What really matters is what happens inside the buildings and on the campus. We see that MICS is gradually gaining more recognition among players in the technological manufacturing industry and within the city and region. The network is growing, even internationally. Metrohm is one of our pioneers – a valuable MICS ambassador from the start.”

The Next MICS Building: Atlas

Atlas is the next building on the schedule, located between Van Heekstraat and the Schie River. Contractor Systabo is responsible for construction here as well. Erik Achterberg (Managing Director, Systabo) explained: “Atlas will be a contemporary 24,000 m² industrial building, featuring shared facilities, such as meeting rooms and hospitality services. It will also contain spaces with flexible layouts and varying sizes, which can be customized to specific needs. Completion is scheduled for 2026, and only limited space is still available.”

SDK Vastgoed has also started preparations for the buildings that will follow Atlas. MICS is still in full development.

About the Mechatronics Innovation Campus Schiedam – MICS

In Schiedam, over 100 acres of an existing business park are being transformed into the Mechatronics Innovation Campus, or MICS: a sustainable, green, and open campus where mechatronics companies, knowledge institutions, and talents of all ages come together to learn and innovate. MICS is set to become the international hub for mechatronics—a collective term for all sectors at the intersection of manufacturing and electronics. Think of robotics, high-tech systems, and automation. The campus is located directly along the A20 highway and within walking distance of Schiedam Centrum intercity trainstation and metro.

MICS will be a place where students and talents from the region—ranging from vocational to university level – find exciting job opportunities. A place where startups, educational institutions and established companies, such as Metrohm, FMI, Boers & Co, and Mikrocentrum, exchange knowledge and ideas. A place that will put Schiedam and the region on the map. Through MICS, the manufacturing industry in South Holland will gain an additional boost, further strengthening the region’s position as a leading center for technology, innovation, and collaboration.
