Upgrade for meeting hub at MICS: ONS building renewed
The ONS building at the Mechatronics Innovation Campus Schiedam (MICS) has undergone a visible transformation. The ground floor has been completely refurbished and is now in use as a modern meeting and collaboration space for the entire campus. From now on, additional meeting rooms, an experience room and an event space can be easily reserved for meetings, presentations and events.
The ONS building, which once served as a public utilities building for the municipality of Schiedam where residents paid their energy bills, has been part of MICS for some time. A larger renovation or redevelopment is planned for the future. In anticipation of this, the ground floor has been modernised and designed as an accessible, professional environment for meeting, collaboration and events.
History and innovation under one roof
The ONS building has a rich history. In the past, it was already ahead of its time in the field of energy, featuring one of the first wind turbines in the Netherlands in the early 1980s, solar panels on the roof and early applications of heat pump technology.
Today, that innovative spirit continues at MICS. The building provides space for companies and educational organisations active in and around mechatronics, as well as other innovative and creative enterprises. Companies such as Lmesh, Makerminds and Itechers are based in the ONS building. The municipality of Schiedam is also working there on the development of SchieDistrict. This makes the ONS building a diverse mix of organisations that together contribute to the continued growth of the campus.
Flexible meeting and event facilities in the ONS building
With the redesign, all meeting and event facilities have been brought together on the ground floor. The ONS building now features three meeting rooms, an event space with a separate breakout room, and an experience room. The experience room houses a digital model that tells the story of MICS and the campus development. The event space currently accommodates around 30 people, with plans to expand capacity to 60, and is used for gatherings and community events such as the monthly lunch lecture Break to Innovate.
The meeting rooms are now fully operational and can be easily reserved via the new online platform. Reservations are flexible: for a few hours, a full day or multiple consecutive days. Both MICS partners and campus employees, as well as external parties, can make use of the facilities. The ground floor also houses SOCOCO, the building’s social coffee and lunch facility, where everyone is welcome for a cup of coffee or a sandwich and where meeting and collaboration come together in an accessible way.
A step in further campus development
The ‘facelift’ of the ground floor was realised by Factor 90 and executed in MICS’ modern industrial style, featuring its recognisable colours. The renewed ONS building therefore serves as an important link in the further development of the campus and as a forerunner to future expansions.
